Transport corridors increase geopolitical importance of Azerbaijan - President
Transport corridors increase the geopolitical importance of Azerbaijan and contribute to the country’s development, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said.

The president made the remarks in the opening of the 4th Global Baku Forum on March 10.

According to him, Azerbaijan is creating a transportation network. “Azerbaijan has an important geographical position, which gives an opportunity to develop the transport infrastructure. The East-West Corridor has recently been launched, and we hope the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway will be commissioned next year,” he added.

Azerbaijan is trying to create a single transport line, President Aliyev said, noting the importance of the North–South Transport Corridor.

The head of state said in 2004-2014, Azerbaijan`s economy has been the fastest growing economy in the world, noting that Azerbaijan ranks 40th in the world for economic competitiveness.

According to the president, Azerbaijan has started post-oil period due to the fact that oil prices have fallen by four times. “No country was ready for the sharp decline in oil prices. We need to work actively to reduce the negative impact of this [oil prices fall],” he added.

Now, the financial situation in Azerbaijan is stable, and the State Oil Fund has sufficient reserves, President Aliyev said. “We are going on the right path, we are currently engaged in the diversification of the economy,” he underlined.
