The director general stressed that Azerbaijan`s ratification of the amendment is an important contribution to the efforts made to ensure the entry into force of the document.
In recent years, much progress has been made in this area, Yukiya Amano said, expressing hope that the amendment will come into force in the near future.
Yukiya Amano then provided information on the application of nuclear technology in areas such as health, agriculture, industry and water management, noting that the IAEA is actively involved in the treatment of diseases such as cancer and diabetes, as well as in the fight against the spread of hazardous viruses in the world.
He expressed satisfaction with the establishment of the Nuclear Medicine Center under the National Centre of Oncology in the framework of the Technical Cooperation Programme between the IAEA and Azerbaijan, underlining that the opening ceremony of the Center on April 15 will be attended by senior IAEA officials.
Minister Mammadyarov in his turn said Azerbaijan is interested in developing cooperation with the IAEA in various directions including the management of water resources and agriculture. He added that intensified consultations with IAEA experts are of interest to Azerbaijan.
During the meeting, the sides also discussed the threats posed by the outdated “Metsamor” nuclear power plant, which is located in Armenia.
