Some MEPs issue statement on escalation of tensions between Armenia, Azerbaijan
Five members of the European Parliament – Rachida DATI (France), Cristian Silviu BUSOI (Romania), Iveta GRIGULE (Latvia), Anna FOTYGA (Poland), Ramona Nicole MANESCU (Romania) and Ivo VAJGL (Slovenia) on Tuesday issued a statement on the latest developments on the contact line of Armenian and Azerbaijani troops.

AzVision.az presents the statement below

In the night from the 1st to the 2nd of April, an unprecedented escalation took place between Azerbaijan and Armenia in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, causing numerous deaths and multiple victims. We would like to express our solidarity with the families whose lives have been shattered by violence.

Since 1988 the Nagorno-Karabakh region has been the scene of destruction, violence and tragedy. Medias are often reporting echoes of incidents, but this is the first time brutality reached this level of intensity.

However, in a region that could become a tinderbox, given its location and the strategic alliances around, we must at all costs avoid destabilization, whose consequences would be as unpredictable as dangerous.

It is now up to the European Union to commit more clearly and to find a peaceful solution through the respect of international law and measures that will restore trust, and with mutual agreements.

For too long, Europe has closed its eyes. Yet this is a key region in our neighborhood, whose actions impacts and involves us directly. We therefore ask the High Representative and Vice- President of the European Commission to visit this region again as soon as possible, to show Europe`s commitment.

As Members of the European parliament, we trust the Azerbaijani authorities, who have repeatedly demonstrated their ability to dialogue, to resume talks and find a way for peace.
