Armenia’s accusations against Azerbaijan over the recent escalation in Nagorno-Karabakh are groundless, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said.
The president said Azerbaijan complies with the ceasefire and is hoping that Armenia also will do so.
Azerbaijan is interested in the peaceful settlement of the conflict and is committed to continuing the negotiation process,” Aliyev noted.
“We welcome the Minsk Group co-chairs’ visit to the region. We believe the status quo will change and Azerbaijani lands will be liberated from occupation, after which the region will prosper,” he said.
The head of state mentioned that the Nagorno-Karabakh region of and seven adjacent districts have long been under Armenian occupation, as a result of which over a million people have become refugees and IDPs.
President Aliyev noted that there are a mechanism and four resolutions of the UN Security Council on the conflict’s settlement.
“Regrettably, these resolutions have not been fulfilled so far. Russia is an important country as a member of the UN Security Council and the OSCE Minsk Group. Russian President Vladimir Putin telephoned me and the Armenian president in order to prevent further escalation,” he said.
With regard to Russian PM’s Medvedev visit to Azerbaijan, President Aliyev said this visit is another manifestation of the friendly relations between the two countries.
“We attach great importance to this visit. Relations between the two countries, regional issues, as well as latest developments in the Nagorno-Karabakh were thoroughly discussed during the meeting,” the president stressed.
