Geopolitical ambitions lie at the core of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Novruz Mammadov, deputy head of the Azerbaijani Presidential Administration, chief of the Administration`s foreign relations department said.

He was addressing the breakout session on “Constructing Peace, Deconstructing Terror” on the sidelines of the 7th Global Forum of the UN Alliance of Civilizations in Baku Apr. 27.

“Seven districts around Azerbaijan’s Nagorno-Karabakh are under occupation, but no one talks about it,” Mammadov said. “When it comes to Azerbaijan, it’s said that Nagorno-Karabakh is a disputed region, and Azerbaijan should negotiate with Armenia.”

He called for respect for international law.

Mammadov said there is a need to think about the reasons behind the creation of terrorist organizations like “Islamic State” and Al-Qaeda.

The top official stressed the importance of paying attention to what happened the collapse of the USSR.

“What has happened over the past 25 years? The number of countries involved in conflicts has increased significantly due to lack of justice in international relations. Geopolitical ambitions began to dominate in international relations,” Mammadov said.

He added that there is multiple-perspective approach towards the problem related the terrorist organization “Islamic State” (IS, known as ISIS, ISIL and Daesh).

Azerbaijan’s official said that the terrorist organization Boko Haram has recently kidnapped more than 220 girls, but no action is being taken against it. “Only we hear that the girls are alive and they are in contact with their families.”
