Karabakh
The status of Nagorno-Karabakh should be determined based on the legally binding expression of will of the region`s people, Russia`s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said on May 6.

Nagorno-Karabakh`s fate should be determined through political and diplomatic means, said Zakharova.

In their statements made from 2009 to 2013 on the principles of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict`s settlement, the presidents of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chair countries noted that Nagorno-Karabakh`s status should be determined based on the legally binding expression of will of the region`s people, she added.

Zakharova noted that Russia stands ready to provide full assistance in achieving this goal.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
