NATO supports resolution of conflict within Azerbaijan`s territorial integrity - James Appathurai
"Azerbaijan will remain a country of strategic importance to NATO even after peacekeeping operations in Afghanistan completed, said NATO Deputy Assistant Secretary General and Secretary General
Appathurai said NATO has specific projects regarding the policy of energy security and cyber security, stressing that the Azerbaijani government for a short time signed the necessary documents for NATO’s new operations to be carried out in Afghanistan and NATO welcomes Azerbaijan’s contributions to ISAF operations.

“NATO will cooperate with Azerbaijan in the fields of defense education, energy security, cyber security, and fight against terrorism. We are working together with Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action to demine these lands for secure settlement of population. We are pleased to do good for the people of Azerbaijan. We can raise cooperation up to the level of strategic partnership. Conducting dialogue on human rights and management is very important for the alliance,” he noted.

James Appathurai said that the cooperation in security issues within IPAP platform continues successfully, adding they will further focus on the development of relations regarding NGOs and extraordinary security challenges.

With respect to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, the special representative noted that though NATO doesn’t play any role in the solution of the problem, the alliance supports the efforts of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs to resolve the conflict.

“NATO has officially announced its position on Nagorno-Karabakh conflict at the Wales summit. We support a peaceful solution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict within Azerbaijan`s territorial integrity and in accordance with the parties’ interests,” he added.
