Azerbaijan expended 2.5B on solving problems of refugees and IDPs to date
The Azerbaijani state has expended 2.5 billion dollars on solving problems of refugees and IDPs to date, said Ali Hasanov, Azerbaijani Deputy Prime Minister, Chairman Chairman of the State Committee for Refugee and IDP Affairs.
He made the remarks at the event held in Baku in connection with June 20 – World Refugee Day.

Hasanov noted that for the same purpose, international organizations and foreign countries have allocated 1.4 billion to Azerbaijan.

He stressed that national leader Heydar Aliyev and his successor President Ilham Aliyev have largely overcome the problem of refugees and IDPs over the past 24 years.

The deputy PM said that after a week Dag Sigurdson, the representative of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Azerbaijan, is to leave Azerbaijan as his office terms is about to expire.

In recent years, the number of refugees and IDPs has doubled, Hasanov said calling for joint efforts to tackle this problem.

Addressing the event, the UNHCR representative in Azerbaijan Dag Sigurdson said this problem can be solved through joint efforts and contributing to the fight against xenophobia.

The UNHCR representative said that he thinks media coverage of the volunteer efforts against refugee problem is dissatisfactory.

Sigurdson mentioned that other countries can benefit from the experience of Azerbaijan that has coped with this problem alone.

He added that Chechens and Afghans are the main group of refugees who have arrived in Azerbaijan.

“They have been living in Azerbaijan for 20 years and are already integrated into society. We are striving for every refugee children to be educated and every refugee family to have their own incomes,” said the UNHCR representative.

During the event, a film dedicated to the care of the Azerbaijani state, donor countries, and international humanitarian organizations was screened.
