Ex-UN General Assembly chief dies amid bribery charges
John Ashe was scheduled to appear in court next week
Former UN General Assembly President John William Ashe has died after suffering a heart attack Wednesday, according to media reports. He was 61.

Ashe served as leader of the 68th session of the General Assembly in 2013 - 2014.

The U.S. government filed charges against the diplomat last October in a bribery case involving a Chinese billionaire real estate developer who allegedly gave Ashe money and gifts in exchange for his recommendation that a UN conference center be built in China.

Ashe was scheduled to appear in a New York court June 27 to face the charges.
