It prepares monthly reports on the human rights situation in the country which are later discussed in the UN Security Council. So far, seven such reports have been produced this year and the eighth is due to be released in late December.
The mission will now have a greater task of consulting the Ukrainian government on the elaboration of a national strategy in the sphere of human rights. The monitors will send reports once every three months.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said on Wednesday that the situation in Ukraine could enter a phase of a “frozen conflict,” posing a threat to the region and the whole world.
According to the latest UN figures, as of December 7 at least 4,634 people were killed, including 298 in the Malaysian Boeing crash in mid-July, and 10,243 others were injured during the conflict in Ukraine.
