Turkey to implement Turkish Stream project – Erdogan
Turkey will implement the Turkish Stream project, President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Aug. 9 in St. Petersburg during a joint press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin, TRT Haber news channel reported.
“The Turkish Stream project will also be implemented,” said the president of Turkey. “We will take the necessary steps together with our ministries and agencies in order to ensure the supply of Russian gas to Europe through this pipeline.”

Erdogan also noted that Turkey currently buys Russian gas in the volume of 28 billion cubic meters, and a part of the Russian gas is purchased by the private sector of Turkey.

“The Turkish Stream will have two pipeline strings, through one, gas will be supplied for Turkey`s domestic consumption, and through the other gas will be supplied to Europe,” said Erdogan.

Erdogan added that Turkey and Russia intend to strengthen bilateral relations and have the necessary capacity for that.

Erdogan also said that the Akkuyu nuclear power plant, which is being built in Turkey under the Russian project, will be a strategic one.

Russia abandoned the South Stream project in favor of Turkish Stream in December 2014, which involves the construction of the gas pipeline from Russia to Turkey through the Black Sea, however, an intergovernmental agreement was not signed.

However, the project was frozen after the relations between Moscow and Ankara deteriorated in November 2015.
