Azerbaijani MP calls on local media to make researches on Gulenists
Azerbaijani media should make researches on the Hizmet movement and Gulenists, followers of US-based cleric Fetullah Gulen, who is accused of the failed military coup attempt in Turkey. The other issues are left to law enforcement agencies, said Aflatun Amashov, MP, Chairman of the Azerbaijani Press Council.
He made the remarks during an event on the theme “Azerbaijani media versus religious radicalism” held at the Press Council on Aug.25.

“Just like the incidents around the liquidated Ministry of National Security, some media agencies label anyone they dislike as Gulenist or Nursist. That’s worrying,” he added.

He noted that Turkey and Azerbaijan enjoy multilateral relations.

“Had the coup attempt succeeded in Turkey, what would have happened in Azerbaijan? That keeps us thinking a lot,” the MP said.

Amashov stressed that the “Ekinchi” newspaper gave huge importance to secularism while determining its values.

According to him, Azerbaijani media is nationalist by nature.

“You could barely find any writing on religious discrimination in Azerbaijani media. Contemporary Azerbaijani journalists are following in the footsteps of their predecessors. Nonetheless, religious discrimination can sometimes be found. That is inadmissible,” he added.
