Azerbaijani MP warns of Metsamor threat in Astana
The forum organized on the initiative of President Nazarbayev brought together 1,000 people from 51 countries and two international organizations.
Azay Guliyev, vice president of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly (OSCE PA) and Samad Seyidov, Chairman of the Committee of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan on International and Inter-parliamentary Relations delivered speech at the conference.
`Kazakhstan`s President Nursultan Nazarbayev ordered on closure of the nuclear facilities in the country to prevent the illegal transportation of nuclear materials. Unfortunately, this problem still remains unsolved in the world, as well as in our region. Herewith, I urge my Armenian colleagues to shut down Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant as soon as possible. Our region situates in seismological active zone. Metsamor NPP is one of the oldest stations of the world. Dear friends, believe me, Chernobyl, Fukushima and Semipalatinsk disasters are on the same level with Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In this fashion, the world unity must not only take measures to dismantle nuclear weapons, but also outdated nuclear technologies. Today the biggest danger is the leak of nuclear materials. 11 nuclear smuggling cases were confirmed in the region in the past years. The latest smuggling case was registered in April, 2016. Georgian State Security Services arrested people on charges of smuggling `Uranium-238` material from the Metsamor NPP`, Seyidov said.
