“Akinci” air base in Ankara renamed
The “Akinci” air base located in Ankara has been renamed as “Murted”, the HaberTurk newspaper reported Sept.6.
This air base was used as a stronghold of plotters during the recent military coup attempt in Turkey.

Reportedly, the “Akinci” air base was called “Murted” till 1995.

The air base, which was created in 1960 near Ankara, was closed down after the failed coup attempt in Turkey.

Earlier, Turkey’s Minister of National Defense Fikri Isik said that a “democracy park” will be created in the place of “Akinci” air base which was the headquarters of the plotters during the failed military coup attempt.

On July 15 evening, Turkish authorities said a military coup attempt took place in the country. Meanwhile, a group of servicemen announced about transition of power to them. However, the rebelling servicemen started to surrender July 16 and Turkish authorities said the coup attempt failed.

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had said the death toll as a result of the military coup attempt stood at 246, excluding the coup plotters, and over 2,000 people were wounded.

Erdogan declared a three-month state of emergency in Turkey on July 20.
