Russia invites Azerbaijan to closer co-op with CSTO
Russia invites Azerbaijan to cooperate closely with the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), said Sergey Markov, director of the Russian Institute of Political Studies.
He made the remarks at an international conference organized by the Center for Strategic Studies under the Azerbaijani President in Baku Oct. 7.

As for Russia’s delivery of Iskander-M tactical ballistic missile systems to Armenia, the political analyst said that Russia has built military-technical relations with many countries including conflicting ones.

He reminded that Armenia is a CSTO member.

“We also invite Azerbaijan to cooperate closely with the organization. There is a strong Armenian lobby in Russia. If we don’t sell the weapons, the US will do it, and in that case both Azerbaijan and Armenia will lose because the same weapons will be twice as expensive to buy,” said Markov.

He noted that Russia`s main goal is to achieve compromises.

“There have to be bilateral concessions. Currently, there are good opportunities for it. The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict can be resolved on the basis of the Kazan formula. Armenia should withdraw from the territories surrounding Nagorno-Karabakh. And Azerbaijan and Turkey should put an end to the blockade of Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh. The Armenian authorities are faced with a difficult situation. The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is not a frozen conflict and it may break out again at any time. Therefore, we must increase our efforts to resolve the conflict,” he added.
