The new administration heads of the Bukhara and Surkhandarya regions had previously served as the acting administration heads, while others led the respective regional administrations.
Under the legislation of Uzbekistan, the heads of administrations of regions and the country’s capital of Tashkent are appointed and dismissed by the president after approval of people’s deputies by the respective councils.
The candidacies for the positions of administration heads are nominated by the president after consultations with each of the party group in local councils.
The administration head candidacies nominated by Islam Karimov’s current decrees, were approved at the first sessions of regional councils of people`s deputies of the new convocation.
It was previously reported that the election to local authorities were held in Uzbekistan on Dec. 21 simultaneously with election to the legislative chamber of the lower house of the country’s parliament, known as the Oliy Majlis.
According to the law on local authorities, the councils of people’s deputies act as representative bodies in the regions.
The administration head, locally known as the hokim, is the highest official in the regions, heads both the representative and executive authority on its territory, and is accountable to the president and the relevant council of people’s deputies.
