Under the country’s law, the first meeting of the Legislative Chamber is convened by the Central Election Commission. It is opened by the CEC head who chairs the meeting until the election of the Legislative Chamber’s speaker.
Moreover, factions of political parties and MP groups will be registered, committees of the Legislative Chamber will be established and approved and committee heads will be elected during the meeting.
It is also expected that a candidate for the country’s prime minister will be nominated during the first meeting of the Legislative Chamber. Under the electoral law, the party which has gathered the largest number of votes during the parliamentary elections, has the right to nominate a candidate for prime minister.
It was reported that 135 MPs from four political parties were elected as a result of the elections held to the Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis on Dec.21, 2014 and re-vote held in 39 constituencies on Jan.4. Moreover, 15 MPs from the Ecological Movement of Uzbekistan were elected at the conference of this public organization by secret ballot.
The Liberal Democratic Party got the largest number of seats (52) as a result of the elections. Moreover, Democratic Party Milly Tiklanish got 36 seats, People’s Democratic Party – 27 and the Social Democratic Party Adolat (Justice) - 20 seats.
Uzbekistan’s bicameral parliament was created in 2005. Its upper house – Senate - employs 100 MPs, while the Legislative Chamber employs 150 MPs elected for the period of five years.
