Central Indonesia hit by 6.0-magnitude earthquake – Meteorological Agency
An earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale occurred on Tuesday near the south-western coast of the Indonesian Java island, however no tsunami warning was issued following the quake, a source in the Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) told RIA Novosti.
The earthquake occurred some 271 kilometers (168 miles) to the southwest of Lebak Regency of Banten province with the epicenter located just 10 kilometers below the surface of the Indian ocean.

No information on casualties or damage from the quake has been provided yet. Indonesia is a part of the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, where earthquakes and eruptions are frequent due to intense seismic activity. A 5.9-magnitude earthquake near Java in 2006 claimed the lives of 6,500 people, with up to 80 percent of the buildings in the town of Bantul being destroyed.
