The island’s leading opposition organizations, including the Patriotic Union of Cuba, also confirmed the release.
Among those who have come from Cuban prisons there are known dissidents and public activists, including “prisoners of conscience” on the list of Amnesty International. Human rights organizations regarded them as political prisoners, while Cuban authorities said all of them were arrested and convicted of various law violations.
The release of all the people is part of the agreement between the United States and Cuba on gradual normalization of bilateral relations broken more than 50 years ago. The list of the people was drawn up by the United States and discussed in secret talks between the two countries with Canada’s mediation.
