Azerbaijan welcomes European Council adopting mandate for talks on new agreement
Baku welcomes the European Council adopting a mandate for the European Commission and the high representative for foreign affairs and security policy to negotiate, on behalf of the EU and its member states, a comprehensive agreement with Azerbaijan, Hikmat Hajiyev, spokesman for Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry, told reporters on Monday.

Hajiyev reminded that Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov on 22 May 2015 met with Johannes Hahn, EU Commissioner for European Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations, during his participation in the 4th Riga summit on Eastern Partnership, presenting to him a draft agreement on Azerbaijan-EU strategic partnership and revealing Azerbaijan’s willingness to improve relations with the EU in this respect.

“We think the signing of a new agreement will create a substantial framework for the EU-Azerbaijan strategic cooperation to enter a new stage and bilateral ties to develop comprehensively,” he added.
