National Flag Day of Azerbaijan marked in Houston
On November 15, the Houston-based Azerbaijani Centre and the Houston-Baku Sister City Association co-organized an official reception at the Houston City Hall marking the National Flag Day of Azerbaijan, the Azerbaijani Embassy in the US told AzVision.az.
US Ambassador to Azerbaijan Robert Cekuta also attended the event.

The event brought together representatives of the Houston City Hall, the Congress, the Texas General Assembly, consulate generals of several countries accredited in Houston, as well as representatives of Azerbaijani, Turkish and Jewish communities.

Addressing the official reception, Irada Akhundova, Director of the Houston-based Azerbaijani Centre, gave information about the history of this remarkable day and underlined the prospects for development of relations between Baku and Houston.

In his speech, Mammad Talibov, Counselor of the Embassy of Azerbaijan in the US, welcomed the guests and stressed that the tricolor, the symbol of the first democratic republic in the East, was hoisted after Azerbaijan regained its independence 25 years ago.

Talibov said this year Baku and Houston mark 40th anniversary of sister-city relations which make a significant contribution to the development of Azerbaijan-US ties.

Speaking at the event, US Ambassador to Azerbaijan Robert Cekuta congratulated the Azerbaijani community of the US on the occasion of the National Flag Day.

The ambassador, emphasizing the strategic partnership between the US and Azerbaijan, said the two countries enjoy successful cooperation in the spheres of energy, security and counterterrorism.

Later on, Mike Laster, a member of the Houston City Council, congratulated the Azerbaijani community on behalf of City Mayor Sylvester Turner and read out the statement proclaiming November 9 as the Flag Day of Azerbaijan in Houston.
