`United group of Russian-Armenian troops is not against Azerbaijan`
The united group of Russian and Armenian troops is not and cannot be against Azerbaijan, said Vladimir Shamanov, the Chairman of the State Duma Defense Committee, former Commander of the Russian Airborne Forces.
He said that the establishment of the united group of the troops only is purely for defensive purposes: “This has been established to protect the southern borders of Russia. In the Soviet Union period, Baku Air Defense District functioned which protected the southern borders of the USSR. Armenia is Russia`s ally in the Collective Security Treaty Organization. Therefore, Russia united its air defense system with this country.”

Shamanov also said that the united group of Russian-Armenian troops only consists of air defense forces. “The question is not about ground forces, but air defense forces. This agreement is purely defensive in nature. Therefore, that was approved by Russian State Duma and the Defense Committee. It, in no way, can be against our fraternal country Azerbaijan”, said the Chairman of the State Duma Defense Committee.
