Iran, Russia can cooperate in global security
Iran and Russia can cooperate for promoting security in the world, Brigadier General Hossein Dehghan, the Islamic Republic
“Cooperation between powerful Russia and powerful Iran can have lasting effects on global security,” Dehghan said, the country’s Fars news agency reported Jan. 20.
“Conditions prevailing in the region and the international situation confirm that,” the Iranian defense minister said.

Dehghan made the remarks during a joint press conference with his visiting Russian counterpart, General Sergei Shoygu in Tehran.

Dehghan said that his talks with Shoygu included a comprehensive overview of the major issues in the region and the world including terrorism and the US intervention in regional and global affairs as well as necessity to tackle the crisis-maker factors.

The two sides are determined to boost mutual cooperation in all fields, the Iranian minister said, adding “we agreed to accelerate cooperation in military area and military technologies for boosting our countries’ defense power.”

Shoygu arrived in Tehran on Jan. 20 for talks with senior Iranian officials on ways to promote defense ties between Russia and the Islamic Republic.

Shoygu and Dehghan signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on military cooperation on Jan. 20.

The accord emphasizes fighting terrorism, extremism and separatism as well as boosting mutual cooperation for peace and security in the region.

The MoU also includes holding joint military drills, cooperation in military training as well as fighting against piracy in international waters and the Caspian Sea, according to the official website of the Islamic Republic’s defense ministry.

The two ministers also agreed to resolve disputes over delivering Russian S-300 missile system to Iran. No further details on the issue has been published yet.
