EU says new legal framework needed to ensure deeper co-op with Azerbaijan
There is a need for the establishment and coordination of a new legal framework to ensure deeper cooperation between the European Union and Azerbaijan, Malena Mard, head of the EU Delegation to Azerbaijan, told reporters in Baku Dec. 15.
“The EU and Azerbaijan agreed to establish a new legal framework for cooperation,” she said, recalling that the current legal framework was created in 1996.

Mard noted that the EU is looking forward to starting negotiations with Azerbaijan on a new agreement that will regulate bilateral relations.

During the year two high-ranking EU officials visited Azerbaijan and this is not an exceptional case, she added.

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini and European Commission Vice-President for Energy Union Maros Sefcovic visited Baku in February 2016 to attend the 2nd meeting of the Southern Gas Corridor Advisory Council.

In addition, three out of the four EU-Azerbaijan sub-committees held meetings in 2016.
