“The minister was in no way threatened by his soldiers but rather continued to carry out the talks,” a government statement read.
This comes after two days of revolting over pay, which led the soldiers to take over several large cities and towns, including Bouake, with gunfire also heard in the commercial capital Abidjan.
Alain-Richard Donwahi, the defense minister, had agreed with them on a deal, which had at first satisfied the soldiers. It concerned payment and improved living conditions. However, renegade troops later disagreed and opened fire, trapping the minister and others in the house where negotiations took place. After several hours, news that they were freed emerged.
