Lithuania joins other Baltic states in building fence along border with Russia
Lithuania will follow the example of fellow Baltic nations Latvia and Estonia this year and erect a fence along its border with Russia, Interior Minister Eimutis Misiūnas told the local media, citing the need to fight cross-border smuggling of alcohol and tobacco, as well as illegal migration, as the reasons for implementing the €3.6 million project.
Unlike the two other countries, Lithuania has no border with mainland Russia, but does with the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad. The border’s length is roughly 294 kilometers, of which the fence is planned to cover 135.
