The statistics do not include the number of Armenian soldiers killed in the skirmishes on the contact line between the Armenian and Azerbaijani troops.
The Helsinki Citizens' Assembly Vanadzor Office (HCAV) also reported that for the last 3 years, 114 of the total of 288 servicemen – nearly 40 percent – died in non-hostile circumstances.
Armenian mothers are afraid of sending their sons to Army and therefore the families try to find an opportunity to keep their sons far from that horror. Most families leave the country in order to protect their sons. Marina Nikogosyan is of them. She told her story of escape to the Lavoz De Galicia, Spanish daily newspaper.
`I came to Spain to save my son's life. I wanted him not to go to the military, fight against Azerbaijan and die. I did not want him to be a victim of any other mysterious crime in the Army. For that reason, I decided to leave when he was 11 because within 14 years it would be difficult to get the permission to leave Armenia`, she explains.
Human rights groups contend that most of the Armenian army suicides are being covered up by army officers who often tamper with evidence of these crimes.
The officers who are responsible for deaths of soldiers do not get any punishment in Armenia – the country’s corrupt judicial system protects them.
The fact that the murders are being announced by Investigative Committee is a nonsense, as the Defense Ministry is obliged to give an explanation regarding the deaths of soldiers.
Armenian Media claims that negative cases in the army happen because of the corruption, spending finance for buying weapons and military equipment, as well as law material and social life conditions of officers.
