Azerbaijan applies for SCO observer status
"Azerbaijan has applied for an observer status in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization", said SCO Secretary-General Dmitry Mezentsev.
Applications for observer status were also filed by Syria, Belarus, Armenia and Bangladesh, he said.

Mezentsev went on to add that in March 2013 the SCO received a request from Ukraine’s Foreign Minister for the status of a dialogue partner. Then, in July 2014, that application was verbally confirmed.

“We value and appreciate these applications and attention to the organisation’s activity. This is an indication that the organisation has gained credibility and influence in the region,’ concluded Mezentsev, who called SCO a unique international union,” he noted.
