Armenia should be sanctioned as aggressor
Political and economic sanctions should be imposed on Armenia as an aggressor, Azerbaijani MP Asim Mollazade told.
He said the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is a serious threat to peace and stability in the region.

Double standards are applied with respect to this conflict, said Mollazade.

The MP said that there are no sanctions against the aggressor and the UN Security Council’s resolutions are not implemented.

“Some of the UN resolutions were implemented in a couple of minutes, like in Libya or Iraq,” he said. “But in the case of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, the strong Armenian community and diaspora in the US and France, and many European countries create double standards.”

“We need strong political and economic sanctions against aggressor,” said Mollazade, adding that if there are serious sanctions it will give the results.

Moreover, Mollazade said that in the case of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, first of all it is necessary to talk about the political condemnation and political pressing of aggressor to peace and there should be a common position among all the Security Council members.

“In this case, I think Armenia will make a concrete step towards peace,” said the MP.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the UN Security Council`s four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
