State Border Service and Prosecutor General’s Office comments on journalist Afgan Mukhtarli’s detention
The press service of the State Border Service and Prosecutor General’s Office of Azerbaijan commented on the detention of journalist Afgan Mukhtarli, AzVision.az reports citing APA.
On 29 May, Azerbaijani citizen Afgan Mukhtarli was arrested for crossing Georgia’s border from Azerbaijan’s Balakan district without identification card, failing to obey the lawful orders of the State Border Service, attempting to flee and using force against them.

During the inspection, border guards found 10,000 euros on him, as well as a Bank of Georgia express plastic card and other items.

Afgan Mukhtarli was detained as a suspect on May 30. He is charged under Articles 318.1 (illegal crossing of the state border of the Azerbaijan Republic) and 206.1 (smuggling) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan.

On May 31, Afgan Mukhtarli was sentenced to pretrial detention on charges under Articles 318.1 (illegal crossing of the state border of the Azerbaijan Republic), 206.1 (smuggling) and 315.2 (resistance to or violence against public officials) of the Criminal Code.
