School-building process in Azerbaijan going on rapidly - Ilham Aliyev
The school-building process in Azerbaijan is going on rapidly, said Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.
The president made the remarks at a meting with teachers and pupils during the opening ceremony of the new building of school-lyceum No. 20 named after Arif Huseynzade.

“The initial impetus to the school building process came from the Heydar Aliyev Foundation. The launch of the project “New school to renewing Azerbaijan” led to a new movement. After that, a number of schools were built at public expenses,” he said.

The head of state noted that from 2004 to date more than 3,000 schools have been overhauled and many new schools built.

"This process continues and will continue because there are still dilapidated schools left,” he added. “On the other hand, thanks to the development of the successful economic policy in Azerbaijan, the population is growing in numbers. This is a very positive factor, which shows the development of our country. The more our population grows, the stronger our country will be. Every year the number of first-graders is growing. In this case, the process of building schools should continue every year.”

President Aliyev stressed that along with the strengthening of the material and technical base of educational institutions, the quality of education is also improving noticeably in the country.

“In recent years, this has been evident from the figures of university admissions. The pupils of our schools demonstrate high performance in international olympiads. According to information available to me, they have won 40 medals, including gold medals. The quality of education is a priority for us. However, before we require this quality from students and teachers, we should create good conditions for them. With new schools opening, the working conditions for teachers are also improving. The school is not only for students, it is also the workplace of teachers,” he said.

The president went on to say: “The salary of teachers is also increasing. In particular, the salaries of teachers who have undergone diagnostic evaluation have risen significantly. I was informed that the average salary of teachers in Baku is over 500 manats. This is a very good indicator. Teachers' salaries should be even higher. The higher, the better.”
