Thursday’s visit marks the first stop in their South American tour which is to include Uruguay, Argentina and Chile.
“It’s a historic visit for our country,” Azerbaijan’s congressman Fuad R. Muradov told.
“Ours is a rapidly growing economy and it is one of the major energy suppliers to the European Union,” Muradov stressed, adding that he hoped that the visit would serve to generate new business opportunities with Paraguay.
“We have much in common though our countries are far away,” he said, after being received by Paraguayan senators in the Congress at Asuncion.
Muradov suggested that his country could advise Paraguay in matters related to energy since they had a lot of experience in oil and natural gas exploitation.
The creation of a parliamentary commission of friendship between the two countries, set up in 2004 and which includes seven senators from Paraguay, helped to strengthen ties and promote this trip, according to another Azerbaijan congressman, Asim Mollazade.
“We came to visit the Parliament to concretize bilateral exchanges,” Mollazade said.
Diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and Paraguay were established on April 20, 2004.
The congressman said that they sought to strengthen ties in sectors like trade, culture and sports with Paraguay and other South American countries.
“We have many small and medium-scale entrepreneurs interested in doing business,” Mollazade added.
The congressmen were accompanied by Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to Argentina, Mammad Ahmadraza, who also serves as the country’s Ambassador to Paraguay.
The delegation was received by Paraguayan senators Enrique Bacchetta, Fernando Lugo and other congressmen.
The delegation is to meet with members of the Legislative and Executive bodies, as well as representatives from Paraguay’s business sector.
