Astana hopes for unbiased election assessment by OSCE observers
Kazakhstan is set to constructive cooperation with international observers at the upcoming presidential election and counts on an unbiased evaluation of the voting results, the Kazakh foreign minister, Yerlan Idrissov, said Mar. 26.
He made the remarks at a meeting with the head of the election observation mission (EOM) from the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights, Cornelia Jonker, Ria Novosti reported Mar. 26.

The presidential election will be held in Kazakhstan on April 26. Kazakhstan’s Central Election Commission registered three candidates for their participation in the election.

The candidates are the incumbent president, Nursultan Nazarbayev, nominated by the Nur Otan Party, Turgun Syzdykov, the candidate nominated by the Communist People’s Party, and Abelgazi Kusainov, the chairman of the Trade Unions Federation.

The pre-election agitation has already begun in Kazakhstan.

Kazakhstan’s foreign ministry said in a message that the country intends to provide the most open, transparent and fair election in line with the internal rules of law and highest international standards.

“The election observation is an important means to support democracy and human rights,” Novosti-Kazakhstan news agency quoted Idrissov as saying, “Kazakhstan attaches great importance to the quality of the observation process, which largely depends on the composition of the election observation mission.”

The foreign minister said the CEC will provide a high organization level of holding the voting, taking into account previous recommendations of the OSCE and other international organizations.

In turn, Jonker emphasized the election observation mission’s readiness for an impartial and unbiased observation.

The first long-term observers of the OSCE ODIHR mission began their activities in Kazakhstan on March 23.
