Employees of national security authorities mark professional holidays on March 28 each year in accordance with the order signed by national leader Heydar Aliyev on March 23, 1997.
The first national security authority was established on March 28, 1919. Under the order of Defence minister of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic Samad bey Mehmandarov, organization for Combating Counterrevolution was created.
Mammadbaghir Sheykhzamanli was the first head of the organization. Then Naghi Sheykhzamanli was appointed to the post. The organization was first called Extraordinary Commission, and then it functioned under the People's Commissariat for Internal Affairs (NKVD) for a while. Afterwards, State Security Committee was formed.
After Azerbaijan gained its independence, the Ministry of National Security was established on November 1, 1991.
The MNS was a central executive authority that carried out the competencies designated to it by the legislation of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the field of obtaining and analyzing information on foreign affairs, corporations, individuals. The MNS also carried out intelligence, counter-intelligence, protection of state secrets, revealing, preventing, precluding and detection of crimes.
