E. Safarov said that children given to foreign families are deprived of citizenship by court.
“Since 2007, the State Committee of Family, Women and Children Affairs has been dealing with the adoption issues which were previously under the authority of the Cabinet of Ministers. Earlier, there were some negative cases on this issue, but now such cases are not observed. To protect the children’s interests we strengthen supervision over them. A child obtains the citizenship of the country in which he lives with his/her new family. However, the child may not be deprived of the Azerbaijani citizenship. This depends mainly on the family adopted him/her,” the State Committee official noted.
Safarov also added that 43 Azerbaijani children were adopted by foreigners in 2007-2014.
“Most of these families are Russian citizens of Azerbaijani origin, as well as US citizens. In addition, the Azerbaijani children were adopted by families from France, Switzerland, as well as Turkish citizens who got married with Azerbaijanis. Up now, no call for adoption from Africa, Asia and Australia has been received,” he completed.
