In Armenia NPP reactor will be closed for repair

The reactor of the Armenian NPP will be stopped on Friday for repairs. On June 1, the reactor (according to the standard annual repair campaign program) and turbine unit No. 3 (for partial modernization) will be shut down.

On August 1, the launch of a power unit with a partially modernized turbo unit No. 4 is envisaged. Commissioning of turbo unit No. 3 is planned for December 1 of this year after completion of its modernization.

As a result of the works planned for 2018, a significant increase in the output of the power unit is expected.

The Armenian government's program provides for the extension of the operating life of the existing NPP unit until 2026, as well as the phased commissioning of new units, although the life of the reactors has long expired.

It should be noted that the Armenian nuclear power plant, unique in the region, is located near the city of Metsamor and is based on the technologies of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, which ceased its activity in 1986 because of the nuclear reactor accident. The first power unit of the Armenian nuclear power plant was put into operation in December 1976, the second - in January 1980. The nuclear power plant was stopped in March 1989 after the Spitak earthquake in December 1988. The second power unit was reactivated in November 1995 due to the energy crisis in the republic.

Recall that the European Union offered assistance in the amount of 100 million euros for the closure of nuclear power plants, and Armenia refused assistance and continues to manage nuclear power plants, exposing the lives of millions of people.

Armenia also does not attach importance to the proposals of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) regarding the closure of the Metsamor nuclear power plant.

According to the ecologists and scientists, the seismic activity of this region turns the operation of the nuclear power plant in Metsamor into an extremely dangerous enterprise, even in the case of construction of a new reactor, as the nuclear power plant has worked its life and further operation can lead to irreversible consequences for the entire region.
