On June 14, 2018 Goethe-Zentrum Baku presents an ‘Art and Football’ project that coincides with FIFA 2018 World Cup. Curated by Goethe-Zentrum Baku director Alfons Hug ‘Art and Football’ is an international video art exhibition with ten video works, a series of live concerts and football matches screening - all taking place at Kapellhaus from June 14 till July 15.
According to Mr. Hug: ‘With its narrative structure, visual language and allegorical richness, football, more than any other form of sport and, indeed, more than many other social phenomena, is ideal for being translated into art. Epic, dramatic, tragic and comic elements flow into this great game which, all the tables notwithstanding, still has something pre-modern and unproductive about it. The stream of events, which cannot be offset against one another, including periods of slack, flows into a kind of musical polyphonic structure.
As time-based art forms, film and video are particularly suitable for illuminating the time concepts of football and the diverse societies. The works projected in one large room, create harmony out of movement and sound, and generate an irresistible vortex of images.
Football is much more than a object filled with air, and rolling across a green field measuring 100 x 60 meters – it is a symbolic space for opportunities. And this is suggested by the spherical form of the ball itself, which, in many cultures, symbolizes the cosmos and time, and knows no end.
The Art and Football exhibition bring pictures to light that come from the "depth of space", to use a metaphor from the German football scene. There is always something sublime about an attack from this no-man's-land. The way the word "space" is used here does not primarily describe a physical dimension, but an abstract, spiritual dimension. The depth of the space seems to be extended until it becomes bottomless, indeed infinite, where a person's subconscious, imagination and collective memory are located. Artists and players are forever sounding out this incommensurable space.’
