Turkey officially ends state of emergency

Turkey ended the emergency rule regime today, which lasted almost two years, Yeni Safak newspaper reported.

Ahead of elections last month, Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan promised to lift the state of emergency if re-elected, but he said the government would also introduce new counter-terrorism legislation and take tough action against any threat to Turkey’s security.

The emergency rule regime was introduced in the republic for the first time on July 20, 2016, immediately after the attempted coup d'·tat on July 15. It was extended by the Turkish authorities seven times.
