Samad Seyidov: European Parliament
Samad Seyidov, Chairman of the Azerbaijani Parliament’s International and Interparliamentary Relations Committee, has made a statement with regard to the resolution on the so-called “Armenian genocide” adopted by the European Parliament.

The statement says:

“We deeply regret the resolution on the so-called “Armenian genocide” adopted by the European Parliament on April 15. This document doesn’t reflect the reality and is an apparent example of double standards. We think the approval of this document became possible thanks to the influence and incentive of some powers that are deeply connected with the Armenian lobby in Europe and stand out with their tendentious position against Turkey and Azerbaijan.

Such a step from the European Parliament is a vivid example of the double standards and Islamophobic atmosphere dominant in the West as well as within the European Parliament. Pro-Armenian powers that approach the events which took place in 1915 – a hundred years ago – through the prism of political interests seek to instigate anti-Turk, anti-Azerbaijan and anti-Islam spirits by brining up past events. As a matter of fact, it is not the fist time a group of European parliamentarians have demonstrated such a baseless approach toward an issue that is to be left to historians for research. Ands it not surprising to see these politicians, who overlook the act of genocide committed by the Armenians against Azerbaijanis in Khojaly and violation of the rights of over a million people that were forced to flee their homes as a result of the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict in recent history, acting so recklessly.

In fact, we have experienced this kind of actions taken on the eve of the Eurovision Song Contest held in Baku, and it is happening now, as the first European Games is approaching. As the head of Azerbaijan’s delegation to Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, I state that we are concerned over the CoE’s approach toward the mentioned issues as well. We have said many times that Azerbaijan is ready to equally cooperate with leading international organizations, including the Council of Europe and the European Parliament. However, this good intent is overshadowed by the double standards we see in some activities of these organizations. Once again, we urge European parliamentarians to be fair about and display a sensitive approach toward the history and fate of nations”.
