The president stressed that if the neighboring countries do not introduce necessary measures to prevent that from happening, he will be forces to send the US military to the borders.
Trump tweeted: "I am watching the Democrat Party led (because they want Open Borders and existing weak laws) assault on our country by Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, whose leaders are doing little to stop this large flow of people, INCLUDING MANY CRIMINALS, from entering Mexico to U.S. in addition to stopping all payments to these countries, which seem to have almost no control over their population, I must, in the strongest of terms, ask Mexico to stop this onslaught - and if unable to do so I will call up the U.S. Military and CLOSE OUR SOUTHERN BORDER! The assault on our country at our Southern Border, including the Criminal elements and DRUGS pouring in, is far more important to me, as President, than Trade or the USMCA. Hopefully Mexico will stop this onslaught at their Northern Border. All Democrats fault for weak laws!"
Mr Trump’s rhetoric on immigration has been among the strongest – and most controversial – he has deployed so far in his presidency.
“These aren’t people, these are animals,” he said of alleged gang members he said were entering the US illegally earlier this year.
Today’s tweets were not the first time he had suggested sending troops to the border with Mexico. In April he said he was “going to be doing things militarily” by sending the National Guard to help secure the area.
It echoed similar initiatives by both his immediate predecessors as president. George W Bush instituted Operation Jump Start from 2006 to 2008 in which 6,000 Guard troops were posted at the border, while Barack Obama’s administration send some 1,200 from 2010 to 2011.
