Statue of Liberty evacuated after suspicious package found
Tourists ferried off Liberty Island after police receive report of a suspicious package.
New York`s iconic Statue of Liberty was evacuated Friday after authorities received a report of a suspicious package, local media said.

Hundreds of tourists were ferried off the Liberty Island where the colossal statue is located.

The New York Police Department bomb squad is investigating the package, which was reportedly found inside a locker, according to ABC-affiliate 7online.com news website.

Ferries are expected to be backed up for the rest of the afternoon, the website said.

No injuries have been reported.

The 305-foot (93-meter) tall statue commemorates the friendship of the peoples of the U.S. and France.

The site was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 1984.
